Södervik Gallery: Light and power
The construction of the Suvilahti power plant and gasworks radically changed the urban landscape of Sörnäinen in the early 20th century. Through old photographs, the exhibition offers glimpses and views into the birth and industrial activities of Suvilahti as well as the development of the Sörnäinen industrial area.
Electricity was produced in Suvilahti between 1909 and 1976, and gas between 1910 and 1994. In the photographs, one can see people, machinery and industrial buildings that no longer exist.
The images are from the collections of the Helsinki City Museum, the Helsinki City Archives and the Museum of Finnish Architecture.
