Södervik Gallery: AJ Fusco & Kate Ruck - Idioglossia
The exhibition title Idioglossia refers to a private, idiosyncratic language spoken by very few people, such as an invented language spoken by twins. The artists draw inspiration from a shared interest in worldbuilding, the natural world, and speculative fiction, in particular Ursula K Le Guin’s Mazes and Joseph McElroy’s Plus, which explore the difficulty of conveying untranslatable abstract information. The exhibition comprises drawings, paintings, digital prints, and laser-engraved works on paper with exhibition text by Laura Savolainen.
AJ Fusco is an American visual artist based in Helsinki. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has exhibited in Finland, Ireland, and the United States. His practice incorporates painting and drawing with digital processes and a conceptual approach, using visual indeterminacy to embody the in-between, the queer, and the unclassifiable.
Kate Ruck is an American sculptor based in Helsinki, Finland. Her work, influenced by mass culture, collective memory, and nature, blends animistic and panpsychist perspectives through digital-to-physical processes. She has exhibited in Denmark, Finland, Germany, and the US. She is pursuing an MFA in Sculpture at the University of the Arts Helsinki, set to graduate in 2024.
